What Census Data Tells Us About Douglaston History
As we complete our Census 2020 surveys, it’s important to know that there is so much more to the Census than just a simple count of population. It is a valuable history of our communities and families. Did you know that the Census used to record when residents immigrated to the United States, if they could read and write, their annual income, their years of education, and even the value of their property? In 1870, formerly enslaved people were listed by name for the first time. This interactive session, led by Queens Memory Outreach Coordinator Lori Wallach, will explore the information we can find in Census records, maps, and historic photographs of Douglaston. Lori is an archivist and frequent instructor for genealogical research workshops.
