FOR TEENS: INSPIRED FUTURES: BUILD A BOOK WORKSHOP (IN-PERSON)

Join us for an inspiring, hands-on workshop where you’ll create artwork and written pieces, imagining equitable and empowering futures for women locally and globally. Using political posters and printed materials from throughout women’s history, you’ll be invited to share reflections on influential women in your life, examine women’s rights movements through visual culture, and explore tangible ways of uplifting women’s voices and experiences. As part of the workshop, your creations will contribute to a Queens-wide digital publication culminating at the end of Women’s History Month.

NATURAL POWER OF WOMEN 

This presentation uniquely illuminates the power of women in tune with Women’s History Month. Mohiniyattam, native to the South Indian State of Kerala, is one of the eight classical dances of India. It is performed by women only and is aligned with the worship of the Mother Goddess, Mother Nature, and Divine Feminine Energy. Performers: Julia Kulakova is a musical theater performer who uses the Internal Arts - Tai Chi Quan, QiGong, Yoga, and ancient dances - to create transformational experiences. Angelina Haque is a classical Indian dancer. She has brought her passion for Indian dance to some of the world’s most prominent stages, from Moscow’s Tchaikovsky’s Hall to New York’s Alvin Ailey Theater. She studied with Guru Bharati Shivaji, Ashwani Nigam, and Janaki Patrik.

Experience the magic of live theatre - Join us for a captivating performance by Shades of Truth Theatre as they present The Life and Times of Rose McCoy. Rose Marie McCoy (April 19, 1922 – January 20, 2015) was a prolific singer-songwriter during the 1950s and 60s. She published more than 800 songs that would be recorded by such legendary artists as Big Maybelle, James Brown, Ruth Brown, Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Ike & Tina Turner.

CULTURE CONNECTION: DESPERATELY SEEKING SOMETHING WITH SUSAN SEIDELMAN (VIRTUAL)

We’re delighted to host this program with Susan Seidelman in honor of Women’s History Month!
Susan Seidelman is an alumna of the Graduate Film program at New York University and began her career in the 1980s, when her movie Smithereens became the first American independent film to be accepted into the Cannes Film Festival. Her next movie, Desperately Seeking Susan, starring Madonna and Rosanna Arquette, was a critical and commercial success. Seidelman has directed dozens of other films, starring actors like Meryl Streep, Brooke Shields, and Sally Field, as well as the first four episodes of the HBO series Sex and the City. In 2024, she wrote the book Desperately Seeking Something: A Memoir About Movies, Mothers, and Material Girls. Susan Seidelman will be interviewed by multimedia artist, graphic designer, and documentary filmmaker Heidi Gelover.

New York Times bestselling author Meryl Gordon will discuss The Woman Who Knew Everyone: The Power of Perle Mesta, Washington’s Most Famous Hostess, her deeply researched biography of the socialite, political hostess, activist, and United States envoy to Luxembourg, Perle Mesta, who was one of the most famous women in America in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. A darling of newspaper political and gossip columnists, and a fixture in society pages, Mesta was renowned for her world-class parties featuring politicians and celebrities. Often underestimated, she championed the Equal Rights Amendment and made key feminist strides, and Gordon’s biography highlights Mesta’s important, but nearly forgotten contribution to American politics and the feminist movement.

Join Producers Marie Domingo and Rita Karl, and equity-focused researchers Dr. Adrienne Stephenson (Florida State University) and Dr. Angel Miles Nash (The Wallace Foundation) to learn about successful and relatable young women in STEM fields. Learn about fields you may have never considered for yourself before! Open to youth of all ages. We will showcase a variety of young women in STEM fields and discuss addressing barriers to gender equity in these fields. Ms. Domingo and Ms. Karl have produced many media profiles of young women in STEM while Dr. Stephenson and Dr. Nash develops equitable STEM outreach programs across the nation.

Join us for an afternoon of mele (songs) and hula (dance), with musicians Kanileʻa Goddard and Kainoa Yasui, and dancer Kawena. The program will feature an array of standards from the canon of 20-21st century Hawaiian music, and share hula ʻauana that animate stories from Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Maui, and Hawaiʻi islands.
