CELEBRATING DIVERSE WOMEN WITH CHINESE PAPER CUTTING AND COLLAGE (IN-PERSON)
Let’s celebrate Women’s History Month together as we honor American women of every race and ethnic background who helped found and build our nation. In this workshop, Master Ming Liang Lu and Sharlene Chou will demonstrate paper cutting, an ancient Chinese art form dating from the Han dynasty. They will also teach you how to be creative with collage art using various objects and materials. Participants will learn how to make women figures of different ethnic backgrounds. Classical Indian Kathak dancers Janaki Patrik, Angelina Haque, Abha Bhatnagar Roy and Meenakshi Lala celebrate several of India's female goddess – SARASWATI: Goddess of Learning and the Arts, DURGA: Goddess of Motherhood, Strength and Protection, and LAKSHMI: Goddess of Wealth. Showing images of the goddesses in painting and sculpture, and performing dances which describe and praise these deities, the dancers explain the symbolism associated with their celebrations. The program concludes with a circle dance named GARBA, which represents the fertility of the female womb - the GARBHA. The audience - both virtual and live - will be invited to learn basic steps of the GARBA dance and join in celebrating women throughout the world. QPL’s Culture Connection is delighted to present an evening of conversation with Terre Roche. Terre is a singer-songwriter, guitar player, teacher, author, innkeeper, and founding member of the musical trio The Roches. She has performed in many clubs and concert halls throughout the U.S. and Europe and appeared on numerous TV shows (including “Saturday Night Live”) over the course of her illustrious career.
Terre has come full circle in her musical journey with the release of the new album/book “Kin Ya See That Sun.” It is a rare collection of live recordings of Terre and her sister Maggie performing songs they created while touring college campuses when they were teenagers. This program will be moderated by Brian Alessandro.

In honor of Women's History Month and Hip Hop's 50th Anniversary, join QPL Hip Hop Coordinator Ralph McDaniels for a discussion about the first record label for hip hop artists, Sugar Hill Records, and its influential and groundbreaking founder, Sylvia Robinson. Uncle Ralph’s special guests are Sugar Hill Records CEO (and Sylvia’s son) Leland Robinson and hip hop legend Wonder Mike, a member of the Sugarhill Gang, whose 1979 single "Rapper's Delight” was produced by Sylvia Robinson.

URBAN STAGES PRESENTS “SHIRLEY CHISHOLM: UNBOSSED & UNBOWED” (IN-PERSON)
This solo dramatic presentation — written and performed by actress, playwright, and teaching artist of Guyanese heritage Ingrid Griffith — is the largely unheard story of Shirley Chisholm, who was the first African-American woman to win a seat in the U.S. Congress and run for the Presidency of the United States. This presentation dramatizes the Civil Rights era, the unrest of the 1960s, and the patriarchal system and all-boys network that Shirley Chisholm was up against, many themes we still see in the politics of today.

CULTURE CONNECTION: AN EVENING WITH AWARD-WINNING NOVELIST NAMWALI SERPELL (VIRTUAL)
QPL’s Culture Connection is honored to host this author talk with Namwali Serpell. Serpell was born in Lusaka, Zambia, and lives in New York. She received a 2020 Windham-Campbell Prize for fiction, the 2015 Caine Prize for African Writing, and a 2011 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award.
Serpell’s debut novel, The Old Drift, won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award for science fiction, and the Los Angeles Times’s Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and it was named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2019 by the New York Times Book Review and one of Time Magazine’s 100 Must-Read Books of the Year. Her book of essays, Stranger Faces, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism. She is currently a professor of English at Harvard University. This program will be moderated by Brian Alessandro.

QPL’s Culture Connection is thrilled to host an evening with Marylou Luther, one of the most legendary and venerated fashion journalists in the United States. Ms. Luther will be discussing her new book Be-Spoke: Revelations from the World's Most Important Fashion Designers. She is the editor and founder of the International Fashion Syndicate and award-winning “Clotheslines” column and is the fashion editor emeritus of newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.
Ms. Luther will be joined by the illustrator of Be-Spoke, Cuban-born artist Ruben Toledo. Mr. Toledo has had his work published in The New Yorker, Vogue, Town & Country, and The New York Times. This program will be moderated by Brian Alessandro.
