Coming to America: Music by Immigrant Jazz Composers

Let’s celebrate the countless contributions immigrant communities have made to the life and culture of this diverse city. We are a beautiful part of what makes New York City and the United States. Jazz bassist, composer and arranger Iris Ornig will perform music of jazz composers and musicians who came to the United States and made an impression in the jazz world as well as upcoming composers and musicians who are living in the US to perform and create their voice as composer and musician. Iris Ornig will introduce songs by Kurt Weill, Friedrich Hoellander, Joe Zawinul, Irving Berlin and many more. She will talk about their stories, fortitude, courage and love that add beauty and depth to our culture. Join us to honor immigrant stories by starting a new life in a new land!

The story centers around Ming Tsu, an orphaned son of Chinese immigrants, raised by a powerful crime syndicate to be a killing machine. He falls in love and marries the daughter of a powerful railroad magnate only to have her kidnapped. Ming sets out to save his wife and retaliate against her abductors. ● Fred Huang is a professor of Brooklyn College, with a doctoral degree in Modern History. He teaches courses on Chinese culture and history and publishes articles on the same topic.

My older cousins and I went from house to house at night, eating roasted chestnuts and Korean sweet potatoes cooked in the middle of the room in a hot metal pot called Hwa-Ro. We listened to elders' stories. Come to learn how to make Jun and listen to intergenerational stories! Perhaps you can bring your kitchen stories with you for National Poetry Month.

AAPI History and Storytelling with Illegal: A New Musical

During this live event, we will give a presentation about Asian American history, how historical anti-Asian bias and racism have shaped today's society, and how we can use storytelling to respond to pandemic-era anti-Asian hate, combat prejudice, instigate justice, and inspire empathy.

From quirky Korean church life to the surprising discoveries in the backrooms of corner stores, we follow the journey of two sisters and their grandmother, from Korea to Queens. We'll take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this podcast. We’ll also talk about the mental health impacts of growing up with immigrant parents, and how as a community, we can be responding to the rise in hate incidents against Asian American women in New York today.
