My World Tween STEM

Using their own narrative arc, participants experience personal growth as they explore, discover, and create using STEM skills. This program is for children going into grades 6, 7 & 8. Classes run July 8-August 13 on Mondays and Tuesdays from 3-4:30pm. Registration is required for each week's two-class session.

July 8 & 9: Digital Photo & Art Manipulation
Explore self-portrait photography, photo enhancement with LED light circuitry, and digital art manipulation.

July 15 & 16: Button Making & Digital Comic Drawing
Explore digital layout, design, drawing, and coloring by creating a comic or cartoon and button based on something meaningful in your life.

July 22 & 23: Little Bits Coding
Explore Little Bits coding kits and create a problem-solving game.

July 29 & 30: Sphero Robotics
Explore a day-in-the-life robotics challenge using our Sphero robots.

Aug 5 & 6: 3D Printing
Create a digital design reflecting something important to you and then use 3D printing to create it.

Aug 12 & 13: Audio & Portfolio Creation
Learn how to present your story with audio narration and either a digital or physical art portfolio.

August 20: Art Exhibit
Everyone is invited to view digital and traditional artwork exploring the life experiences of our My World Tween STEM participants. Check out our community art exhibit and gain inspiration for your own art exploration!

Discovery Team Summer STEM Programming

Join us Thursdays from 2:30-4pm. For rising sixth graders and up; seating is limited; please reserve a seat.

July 11: Wired!
What is electricity? Make conductors and insulators; create electrical circuits. Use everyday materials.

July 18: Renewable Energy
We’ll explore some renewable energy strategies and the importance of sustainable energy for a cleaner city. Kids will use the design and testing process to explore wind and solar energy, plus create some fun, sun-powered vehicles.

July 25: Light and Lenses
Kids will learn the basics of how light works with lenses, including our eyes. We’ll dissect sheep eyes and compare biological lenses to glass lenses. Extending this exploration, kids will learn how the physics of light and lenses is applied to visual aids – eye glasses, microscopes, and telescopes.

August 1: Cover Ups: Fashion Design
Our designers will be thinking in 3D as they measure, imagine, design, and think about how to create cut and connect fabric shapes to fit our bodies. They will learn about different types of fabrics and different methods to combine them in wearable fashion.

August 8: Body Works: Physiology
We’ll go more than skin deep to figure out what makes our bodies work, exploring blood and guts and bones and muscles. Be prepared for some dissection and assembling a mockup of body systems.

August 15: The Big Wide Food Web
Investigate who eats what and how we fit into the grand scheme of energy flow. We’ll start with a food chain with owls, tearing apart owl pellets, figuring out what species of smaller animals the owls ate, researching what the prey was eating, and going up the chain.
