Artist's Statement
“I am fortunate enough to grow up in the colorful borough of Queens, New York. The freedom to read reflects the unique myriad of cultures that coexist in this community that I am proud to call home. Reading allowed me to not only understand different perspectives, but form connections with fellow Queens residents from all walks of life. Whether it be bonding about favorite characters, or sharing and appreciating each others’ cultures through book recommendations, books are a sanctuary. No matter the reason, banning books would restrict these connections and sense of community, encouraging closed-mindedness in a city that thrives in its diversity. In an increasingly polarizing climate, the freedom to read is essential to a kinder and more interconnected world. Taking away the freedom to read is the antithesis of what defines Queens, and I hope to convey these sentiments with this submission.”
