at Queens Public Library

Happy New Year!

Lunar New Year is a tradition for welcoming a fresh start to the new year, as well as for honoring ancestors. We invite everyone to enjoy our book recommendations and join us for special programs (including traditional music, crafts, and more) celebrating the Year of the Dragon. We will also be marching in the 2024 Lunar New Year Parade in Flushing on Saturday, February 10. We can’t wait to see you out there!

Come join us for the Lunar New Year and Spring Festival! To celebrate the Year of the Dragon, the Association of Chinese Calligraphy in America Inc is hosting a special ‘Calligraphy & Spring Festival’ event! This event is open to the public, and there will be teachers from the association writing Chinese characters, like ‘福’ (fortune), on the spot for everyone to enjoy! The program will be presented in English and Chinese.

CULTURE BRIDGE: CELEBRATE LUNAR NEW YEAR-KALEIDOSCOPE OF JAPANESE SOUNDS WITH DUO YUMENO (IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL)

Join Flushing Library as we present an unforgettable performance of Duo YUMENO, who will perform their dynamic repertoire, inspired by Japanese classical literature and poetry depicting the beauty of nature, historic battles, and universal human emotions. Featuring Yoko Reikano Kimura on koto (Japanese zither-like instrument) and Hikaru Tamaki on cello, the duo will present a versatile program of traditional Japanese music, which has more than a thousand years of history, from its ancient origins to contemporary composers. THE LEGACY OF THE DRAGON: LUNAR NEW YEAR MUSIC AND DANCE CELEBRATION WITH BA BAN CHINESE MUSIC SOCIETY

Step into the enchanting world of Chinese tradition, where the dragon embodies the spirit of its people, celebrated as the ‘descendants of the dragon.’ During festive occasions, amidst the rhythmic melodies of ‘dragons leaping and tigers dancing,’ people engage in dragon and lion dances or dragon boat races. The Ba Ban Chinese Music Society’s performance is a poetic journey inspired by the ‘Nine Sons of the Dragon,’ offering nine unique pieces that beautifully interpret the dragon’s cultural essence. Join us for a celebration that harmonizes tradition and innovation, inviting you to embrace the majestic heritage of the dragon. The program will be presented in English and Chinese.
